Use of daytime running lights

In the context of the new legislative conditions governing the operation of motor vehicles and mandating all-day lighting, replacement lighting for vehicles designed exclusively for daytime lighting in low visibility is very topical. The design and positioning of daytime running lights is determined by ECE/OSN Type Approval Regulation No 48, which is prescribed by Decree No 341/2002 Coll. and their use is governed by Act No 361/2000 Coll. on road traffic, as amended by Act No 411/2005 Coll. Daytime running lights are characterised by a strongly diffused light flux which does not form a cone as in the case of conventional headlights. The diffuse nature of the light does not dazzle oncoming drivers or illuminate the roadway, but sufficiently ensures the essential condition for safe traffic 'to be seen'. The main benefit of these additional lights is energy saving, as they do not illuminate the vehicle's position, dipped-beam or tail lights. Savings will also be made by extending the life of the bulbs or lamps, which will be felt especially by drivers of vehicles with xenon headlamps, whose lamps have a longer life than conventional bulbs but are significantly more expensive to replace. The fitting of daytime running lights does not constitute a conversion of the vehicle or a change in the technical data and therefore their fitting to the vehicle is not subject to any additional approval or registration.

Basic rules for retrofitting daytime running lamps

- two units (one pair) of lamps shall be fitted per vehicle

- they shall be placed horizontally between 250 mm and 1500 mm high on the front of the vehicle

- the distance of the lamps from the side contour shall be a maximum of 400 mm and the distance between the lamps shall be a minimum of 600 mm (for vehicles with a width of less than 1300 mm a 400 mm distance between the lamps is permitted)

- the lights shall come on automatically when the ignition is switched on (engine started) and go out when the ignition is switched off

- the daytime running lamps shall go out automatically when the position lamps are switched on
