New rule in Spain effective January 1, 2026.
Are you planning a trip to Spain or do you operate vehicles that travel there? Get ready for a change that will affect every driver. Spanish authorities are introducing a modern safety feature — the warning triangle will be replaced by a high-performance V-16 beacon, which significantly increases visibility and safety on the road.
What is the SOS V-16 Beacon?
The SOS V-16 Beacon is a bright orange light that is placed on the roof of a vehicle in the event of a breakdown or accident. Unlike the older warning triangle:
the driver does not have to get out of the vehicle and stand on the side of the road to place the sign.
is a device connected to the official DGT 3.0 system and transmits vehicle location data.
increased visibility: the device covers the surroundings in 360°, improving protection on highways and roads with higher speeds
Why this change?
Statistics show that a significant number of deaths on the highways in Spain are related to situations where drivers got out of their vehicles to place the warning triangle.
The V-16 beacon minimizes the risk of getting out of the vehicle in a dangerous area, improves the visibility of the vehicle and, thanks to geolocation, enables the sending of virtual warnings to other drivers.
It's a more modern approach to road safety at a time when technology is playing an increasingly important role.
Who does this change affect?
All vehicles operated in Spain, including those driven there. Get ready for a change that will affect every driver in the country.
