Vehicle antennas for CB radios

A CB antenna has a decisive effect on communication range and signal quality. The range includes compact and long whip antennas from approximately 34 to 200cm, magnetic-base models for quick installation and versions intended for a fixed bracket. Most cover 26–28 or 26–30MHz; depending on the model, they handle power from tens to hundreds of watts and use RG58 cable with a PL259 connector. A longer antenna will generally provide better efficiency, but it must suit the available space, vehicle height and mounting method. Before choosing, check the operating band, maximum power, cable length and type, connector, magnet diameter and package contents, as some antennas are supplied without a base or cable. Place a magnetic base on a clean, flat metal surface that provides an effective ground plane, and do not trap the cable in a door. Always measure and adjust the standing-wave ratio after installation. Never transmit with a disconnected or badly matched antenna, as this may damage the radio.
